WHAT IS GREEN AMMONIA?

Ammonia is a common, naturally occurring chemical made up of one nitrogen atom and three hydrogen atoms. The chemical is used in many sectors worldwide, from household cleaning products to heavy industry, giving it ample opportunities for growth.

Green ammonia

Ammonia is traditionally produced by Steam Methane Reformation (SMR), which converts hydrocarbons into hydrogen.

The hydrogen is then synthesized with nitrogen to create ammonia. SMR is an efficient and cost-effective solution for ammonia production, however, it has a high environmental impact.

Blue hydrogen seeks to counteract some of the emissions by adding a carbon capture into the system to prevent emissions from enterring the atmosphere.

Although Blue hydrogen drastically reduces the impact of SMR, there are still significant emissions associated with the process.

Green ammonia, on the other hand, is created using electrolysis, which is completely emissions-free. Electrolysis uses electricity to separate water molecules to create hydrogen.

When the energy used for electrolysis is fully renewable, such as solar or wind, the process has virtually no impact, making it completely green.

Champ de récolte

AGRICULTURE

Over 70% of the global supply of ammonia goes to the agricultural industry. In the industry, ammonia is used primarily as fertilizer, however it is also used often in livestock feed, as well as for crop protection.

CEMENT

A key use for ammonia is in the cement industry, where it is used in the cement-making process. Green ammonia will be a key driver in the cement industry as demand grows and NOx regulations become more stringent.

INDUSTRY

Heavy industry is another key player in the global demand for Green Ammonia. A large industrial market is in the mining industry, where ammonia is commonly used to extract metals such as iron, nickel and copper.

The Challenges of Traditional Renewable Energy

Traditional renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power productions may be instable, which prevents them from widespread use. Because renewable energy methods rely on the environment to generate power, it’s not guaranteed that these method’s peak production periods will align with the public’s peak consumption.

This results in either a lack of supply in high-demand periods, or wasted energy during times of high production. This means that energy needs to be stored to ensure reliability, which can be a complicated and expensive process. Lithium batteries can be used, however, they are expensive to build, take up a large footprint, and have environmental concerns of their own during resource extraction and manufacturing.

Green ammonia can provide a cost-effective solution to balancing utilities-grid by using electrolysis to store energy during peak production, and converting it back to energy during high demand. Pair this with the ability to efficiently and inexpensively transport energy via pipeline, truck or rail, and green ammonia could prove to be an effective solution to balancing renewable energy grids.

Is green ammonia the solution?

When the electrolysis process is conducted, it effectively stores energy in the hydrogen it creates.

Hydrogen is a small molecule, making it more difficult to transport. Ammonia is a stable gas that stores more energy than hydrogen and can be cooled to a liquid and transported with ease through existing natural gas or propane infrastructure.

When transportation is complete, the molecules could be used as a fuel, or broken back down, which releases the energy that was stored, allowing us to power everything from our power grid to our vehicles.
